The 12th Platino Awards: Spanish-language content gets a boost

The 12th Platino Awards will take place in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday night, with industry icons attending and a prestigious honorary prize awarded to Eva Longoria.

Spanish legend Pedro Almodóvar is nominated for his English-language debut, The Room Next Door, which premiered in Venice last year.

F1 series Senna's Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone is also nominated, competing against Almodóvar for top honors.

Fernanda Torres is nominated for her performance in Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here, while Úrsula Corberó is nominated for her role in Luis Ortega’s Kill the Jockey.

Luis Ortega, the Argentine director nominated for best director for Kill the Jockey, admits that he doesn’t like traveling and finds the Trump administration unappealing.

Ortega discusses the challenges of funding his next film, Magnetized, stating that dealing with people who have money is boring.

The director highlights the challenges faced by Spanish-language content, including people not liking reading subtitles and needing to know English to communicate with international partners.

Ortega jokes that Spain has its own Pacino, who dubs the actor’s voice for every film he stars in, making it harder for Spanish-language content to be taken seriously.

Brazilian actor Hugo Bonemer notes that every human being wants to be valued by their work, recognized for their efforts, and is optimistic about the prospects of Spanish-language content.

The 12th Platino Awards will celebrate Spanish-language content, bringing together the biggest filmmakers from central and southern America, Spain, and Portugal.
