The world of cinema has long been fascinated by the complexities of prison life, but few productions have dared to delve into the nuances of life behind bars. This is where 4Kaya, the brains behind the critically acclaimed Malawian movie, School Days, comes in – back with another classic production, Welcome to Maula Prison, set to premiere on May 3 in Lilongwe.
Breaking Down Barriers
According to Public Relations Officer for 4Kaya, Désirée Namachotsa, this movie is a special production with a special message – one that aims to demystify the notion that prison is a place for punishment. By sharing the stories of those who have been incarcerated, 4Kaya hopes to bridge the gap between the community and those within the prison premises.
- “As the team was coming up with this movie, they wanted to dive into spaces that Malawians don’t usually dive into. So, asking and finding out stories of the people that are in prison, we really did want to also bridge the gap that is between the community as well as people that are within the prison premises,”
- Namachotsa explained.
A New Perspective
The movie, the third production by 4Kaya, was shot within the walls of Maula Prison in Lilongwe. What’s unique about this production is that it features a majority of new faces in the cast, including inmates who were identified from auditions held at Bingu National Stadium in the city.

A Message of Hope
According to Assistant Superintendent Steve Meke, the national spokesman for Malawi Prison Services, the movie has the potential to change the way people perceive ex-convicts. By showcasing the reforms and rehabilitation efforts being implemented by the prison services, the movie aims to promote a more inclusive and supportive society. “For quite some time people have been creating stories that are not true about Malawi Prison Service but with this film they will be able to see exactly what steps the MPS is taking to reform and rehabilitate inmates at different levels,”
Meke said.
A Content Development Program
The production of Welcome to Maula Prison was supported by the Universal Service Fund under the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority. The fund, which aims to promote the creation of content for Malawian society, provided K17 million kwacha to support the movie’s production.
- • The fund was established under the Communications Act with the sole purpose of covering gaps in the communication sector
- • Content development is a key focus area for the fund, with the aim of advancing the development of content that is relevant to Malawians
A $200 Million Budget
The support for the movie is part of a larger initiative by the Universal Service Fund, which has set aside K200 million for the current cohort of beneficiaries. This funding will be used to produce content such as movies, documentaries, talk shows, and podcasts, aimed at enriching television sets and social media platforms.
- • The fund is part of a broader effort to promote content creation in Malawi
- • The goal is to create content that is relevant and engaging for the Malawian audience
