Artistic representation for The Magic of Cinema: Spring Fest at the Dietrich Theater

The magic of cinema is alive and well at the Dietrich Theater, where the annual spring fest is about to take place. With a diverse lineup of 23 foreign and independent films, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Immersive Experiences

According to Erica Rogler, Executive Director of the Dietrich Theater, two movies in the Spring fest lineup are must-see experiences on the big screen. The first one is “Flow,” a film with no spoken word, told through animation that is a work of art. The second one is “The Dawn of Impressionism: Paris 1874 Exhibition on Screen,” which offers a unique and intimate experience, allowing viewers to get up close and personal with the art.

  • “Flow” is a film with no spoken word, the story is told with animation that is simply a work of art.
  • “The Dawn of Impressionism,” at least for me, is better than being at the museum. No crowds, no waiting in line, it is a very up-close experience.

A Diverse Lineup

The Spring Fest lineup features a range of films, including “Penguin Lessons,” the story of a disillusioned British teacher in Argentina, played by Steve Coogan, whose life is changed when he rescues a penguin. Another notable film is “Rule Breakers,” the story of Afghan girls who break Taliban rules to compete in robotics.

Crowd-Pleasing Films

The Spring Fest lineup also includes “The Friend,” starring Bill Murray and Naomi Watts, which tells the story of Iris, whose life is forever changed after her best friend dies and she is bequeathed a 150-pound Great Dane. Another thrilling film is “Black Bag,” starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, directed by Steven Soderbergh, which follows the story of a spy drama.

A Family Tradition

The Spring Fest is also a special event for the family, as my grandson Aidan is coming to the festival and wants to see “Flow” on the opening night. It’s a long-standing tradition for my friends and me to volunteer on opening night and then attend the first film the next day to relax and enjoy the movie. Aidan is excited to see “Flow” on the opening night, and we are all looking forward to it.
